Class 142 BREL Derby/Leyland Bus, Workington.

Cummins L10A Turbocharged diesel engine rated at 225hp @ 2100rpm

Voith T211r two stage oil driven transmission powering the inner axle using Gmeinder beville drive via carden shafts. Protected by automatic fire system.

Couplers: BSI with integrated electrical connections at outer ends. inter-vehicle coupling is a permenant bar coupling.

Multiple working available between vehicle fitted with BSI couplers in the 14x, 15x, 170 range to a maximum of 8 vehicles. Can be assisted by locomotives in emergency when fitted with appropriate adapter coupling. No gangway connections are fitted on the outer ends, inner gangway connection being via 'floating' diagphram.

Brakes are Davies & Metcalfe EP tread brakes, using electrical signals to actuate the brake applications. not compatible with locomotive EP/Air/Dual braking equipment.

Current operators: Northern Rail, Arriva Trains Wales, First Great Western

NOTES:

142059 withdrawn after running away in the tunnel between Edge Hill & Liverpool Lime Street in 1989. Unit ended up on the station concourse.

142008 withdrawn after colliding with a Freightliner at Winsford Cheshire in 1994.

Both trains were running ECS at the time.
