Class 156 Metro-Cammell Birmingham

Cummins NT855-R5 Turbocharged Diesel engine rated at 285hp @ 2100rpm

Voith T211r two stage oil driven transmission powering the inner bogie using Gmeinder master & slave beville drive via carden shafts. Protected by automatic fire system.

Bogies classified as BT38 (trailer) and P3-10 (powered)

Couplers: BSI with integrated electrical connections at outer ends, vehicles coupled by the mechanical portion of the BSI in a semi-permenant state with seperate main air and electrical connection.

Multiple working available between vehicle fitted with BSI couplers in the 14x, 15x, 170 range to a maximum of 12 vehicles (8 if 14x in formation). Can be assisted by locomotives in emergency when fitted with appropriate adapter coupling.

Outer ends fitted with gangway connections to enable walk through facilities.

Brakes are Westinghouse 'Westcode' EP tread brakes, using electrical signals to actuate the brake applications. not compatible with locomotive EP/Air/Dual braking equipment.

Set numbers 156401 - 156514.
Vehicle numbers: DMS 57xxx, DMSL 52xxx

Seating: DMS 76S, DMSL 74S (includes disabled access toilet)

Current operators: Northern Rail, East Midlands Trains, First ScotRail

NOTE:

In 1989, 156502 visited Utrecht in Holland for an international railways exhibition, and made the journey under its own power. To this day it carries a NL sticker above its secondmans side winscreen.
